It’s that time of year again, and we are lucky enough to introduce you to the newest members of the Design Portfolio (DP) family!
It’s been a pleasure getting to know our new starters and ensuring their onboarding process has been as smooth as possible. Company culture is very important to us at DP and we want to ensure that we are all there to support each other and create great things together. With this in mind, we caught up with our new starters to learn more about them and why they chose to work at DP.
Richard Sharred
Account Director
I'm excited to be joining DP as an Account Director. I have previous experience in corporate reporting, having worked in the industry for the past five years.
I'm passionate about building long-term relationships with all my clients. I always believe that exceptional creative work goes hand in hand with clients enjoying their agency experience.
Why did you choose DP?
I got a really good first impression of DP from my initial meetings with Ian, Julie and Jess. They were all great. I was looking to start the New Year with a fresh challenge and I felt that DP would give me that, as well as being the right next step for my career.
How are you finding DP?
I feel like I've made the right decision. The meticulous planning for success and level of thought that's clearly gone into DP’s processes is very reassuring as a newcomer. I feel like every effort is made to help new joiners succeed.
What do skills do you bring to your role?
A can-do attitude and a strong desire to deliver work of the highest quality. I am someone who wants to help contribute to the overall success of the team and play my part. I'd say I also bring a diverse range of experiences from working with businesses across a variety of sectors. I love to understand how different businesses tick.
Eve Byram
Account Executive
Hi, I’m Eve and I recently graduated from the University of Leeds having done my undergraduate and master’s degrees there. In my spare time, I love baking, running and doing yoga classes.
Why did you choose DP?
I chose DP because of its company values and great reputation in the industry. The range of projects and clients that DP work with allows me to gain exposure to several different areas of corporate reporting and communications. This was really important to me as I’m just starting out in my client services career.
How are you finding DP?
I’m loving my time at DP so far, everyone has been so welcoming and friendly! I’m now involved more heavily with specific client projects; this is exciting as I will be able to see the job through from start to completion.
What do skills do you bring to your role?
Alongside my master’s degree, I completed a copywriting internship which has come in handy when proofing Annual Reports. I also have some social media marketing experience which has allowed me to get involved with the marketing team here at DP. Throughout my degree, I worked in administration and customer service roles which lend themselves perfectly to my role as an account executive.
Mark Nevard
Designer
My previous career culminated in me being an office manager for a furniture fittings company (if you ever fancy a chat about soft close hinges, I’m your man). So, after spending a long time not knowing what my vocation was, I decided to quit and go to uni and study graphic design. I would write about what I like to do in my spare time, but I have a two and a half-year-old son, which means I don’t have any. But in a past life, my main interests included music, especially going to gigs and festivals, cinema and food. I also have a big passion for hand lettering and try to pick up a pen and paper whenever I can.
Why did you choose DP?
I chose DP as I was looking to join an agency where I could learn a lot and progress my career. After speaking to Leon, Julie and Nik, I could sense their passion and ambition, which was backed up by a list of impressive clients. As well as this, they came across as genuinely friendly and approachable, so I knew this was a perfect next step for me.
How are you finding DP?
So far I’m enjoying it. It’s been busy but rewarding at the same time. Plus, everyone has been really welcoming.
What do skills do you bring to your role?
As well as having five years’ experience in corporate communications, my experience from my previous career means that I’m used to dealing with clients and strict deadlines, meaning I have quite a unique skillset for a designer at my level.
Charlotte Harrington
Account Executive
Hi, I’m Charlie! I started at DP as an Account Executive in November 2021 after finishing a Masters in English, which was certainly a challenge to complete during a pandemic. In my free time, I love relaxing with Netflix and eating chocolate, and I have a bit of an obsession with the colour pink (for a few months last year, even my hair was pink!).
Why did you choose DP?
I knew I wanted to work in a field such as publishing or communications, and I realised that working as an Account Executive for DP would be the perfect blend of the two, as it allows me to work with both proofing reports and interacting with clients.
How are you finding DP?
I have loved my first few months here – DP has been so welcoming and everyone has been happy to answer my many, many questions as I settle into my role! I’ve never been made to feel bad about making mistakes while I’m learning and I have already made great friends with my colleagues here!
What do skills do you bring to your role?
Coming from a background in English literature, I really enjoy the proofing side of my role, as it allows me to work closely with language – reading hundreds of books for my degree has definitely paid off! I also have a background in customer service, which has come in handy when working with clients.
Joe Balfour
Web Developer
I am a web developer living in West London. I moved here around five years ago after escaping the midlands and have lived in various places across the city.
Why did you choose DP?
I’ve worked for a few design agencies and DP seemed like a new, exciting step to push forward my skills whilst also playing towards my strengths.
How are you finding DP?
It’s weird starting a job in a pandemic where we’re all working from home, but it’s been great so far. Everyone has made a big effort despite most interactions being online and it feels normal.
What skills do you bring to your role?
Mixing logic and programming with an eye for design.
James Wagstaff
Digital Account Manager
I’m a little bit of an adrenaline junkie. Skydiving, scuba diving, snowboarding and a regular monthly paintball game – I’m never short of a few bruises.
Although I’ve spent the last seven years training to be a graphic designer and website developer, it turns out I really enjoy building and developing client relationships.
Why did you choose DP?
After looking at a few companies, I chose DP due to the importance they place on company culture and providing their team opportunities for growth both in and out of the workplace.
How are you finding DP?
My DP journey has only just started, however everyone has been super helpful and friendly so far!
What do skills do you bring to your role?
I’d say my strength is in creative problem solving and idea generation. If there is a better, more efficient solution to a problem, chances are I’ll find it.
Lily Quilor
Senior Creative Artworker
I previously worked with Design Portfolio back in 2005 for three years, and have now decided to return after 13 years apart. I can speak two different dialects of Chinese (Cantonese and Hakka) as well as English. I love travelling, visiting new places and exploring different cultures.
Why did you choose DP?
I used to work with DP back in 2005 for three years and the opportunity came to join them again.
How are you finding DP?
Great, it is lovely to be able to work with DP again. All the staff are very nice, helpful and make me feel so welcome. It makes me feel like home again.
What do skills do you bring to your role?
I have over 16 years’ experience producing corporate reporting and marketing collateral. I have worked in various design agencies within the industry.
Chris Jeeves
Designer
Over the last nine years, I have designed for print, digital and motion across corporate reporting and communications, branding and retail, both in-house, at agencies and freelance.
Why did you choose DP?
It was an exciting prospect to be joining a successful, growing business, to contribute my own experience and to continue to grow and develop as a designer.
How are you finding DP?
I was a little apprehensive about starting remotely as I’ve never done that before, but I shouldn’t have worried; everyone at DP has been so friendly and helpful. Although it is early days, I’ve already worked on some exciting creative briefs, too.
What do skills do you bring to your role?
I have previous experience in corporate communications and with the increasing number of branding jobs coming on board, I’m looking forward to contributing my knowledge to those.
Emily Smith
Account Executive
I am a recent graduate from the University of Leeds, with a BA in History and Philosophy. I am an active person and in my free time I love doing yoga and various exercise classes.
Why did you choose DP?
DP has a structure that encourages growth. I can clearly see how I can progress in the company, and I want to invest my time in doing so!
How are you finding DP?
I have settled in very well at DP, firstly because everyone has been so friendly and welcoming, and also because of the induction and training sessions which meant I met colleagues from all different departments.
What do skills do you bring to your role?
My experience in customer service and hospitality developed two main skills - organisation and communication - which I bring to my role at DP.
As I am new to the industry, my desire to develop new skills in corporate communications is advantageous.
Jack Rowland
Account Manager
I'm Jack, and I joined DP in the new year as an Account Manager. I have a few years of experience in corporate reporting and communication, but from a consultancy and content and strategy angle.
Why did you choose DP?
I was very much looking for a step-change, a new challenge and a fresh start. My new role has given me just that, and it also gives me the chance to work with some fantastic clients in a growing (and really exciting!) agency.
How are you finding DP?
I've had a brilliant first month and received a tonne of support and guidance whilst I've been learning the ropes. The team has even made working from home fun!
What skills do you bring to your role?
I'm well-rehearsed in reporting best practice and regulation, and I also have a keen eye for creative storytelling. I'm very much looking forward to my learning journey here, strengthening my account management skills and starting to build client relationships.
